Per Olov Enquist.
The Visit of the Royal Physician.

The novel by a prominent contemporary Swedish writer is based on a tragic episode from the Danish history. A German physician, Johann Friedrich Struensee (1737-1772) gets the power in the country and holds it for 4 years, due to his influence on the mentally ill king Christian VII. Romantic relationship with the queen makes Struensee's situation even more dramatic. His attempt to make Denmark an enlightened monarchy ended tragically: his reforms were abolished and he was executed. The Visit of the Royal Physician is not a historical novel only, but also psychological and philosophical. The author's position is devoid of straightforwardness, and therefore attractive.
