In the history of literature this book is the first of its kind: the author, having received worldwide recognition, put together this book which he dreamed of seeing when he was young and still unknown. Part of the stories included have never been published in Russia due to censorship, another part appeared in Europe in the 1960s. Besides this, Bitov included many documents in his early prose, thanks to which The Author's First Book became not only a literary fact, but also a historical one. The contemporary Bitov is presented in this edition, with the story Autobiography.
