The book written by a famous philosopher and cultural studies scholar, historian of science and poet reconstructs the image of medieval alchemy in its heretical, explosive confrontation with the medieval tradition. Heterogeneous nature of alchemy is investigated regarding its complex relationship with the intellectual life of the epoch. In this context the central role of alchemy in radical transformation of medieval culture into the culture of the early modern period, its science, art and literature, becomes quite clear.
