The papers collected in this volume concern the "Russian period" in the biography of Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1826). Rilke visited Russia twice in his life - in 1899 and 1900. Leonid Pasternak, Leo Tolstoy, Alexander Benois and other prominent cultural workers were among his correspondents. The German poet's passionate affection towards everything that was Russian seems really unique. Rilke spent several years studying fervently the Russian language and history, translating the works of Dostoyevsky and Chekhov into German. The edition was prepared by K. M. Azadovsky, a noted specialist in German language and literature. The materials included in the book are accompanied by the commentary based on the archive research of many years.
