Zbigniew Herbert (1924 - 1988) is one of the most prominent Polish authors of the second half of the 20th century, also a playwright and an essayist. A Barbarzy?ca w ogrodzie is the first part of an original trilogy devoted to the Mediterranean European culture, seen by the eyes of an intellectual from the East Europe. The book was translated into almost all of the European languages, and the critics compared it, in the respect of its aesthetic and cultural importance, to the essays of Jorge Luis Borges. This is the first occasion that the prose by Zbigniew Herbert is published in Russian.
